Technology Growth at Marshwood

by Mike Woodman

Technology is an important aspect to everyday life in the 21st century. But is technology appropriate in everyday situations at Marshwood High School?

Like most issues, there are pros and cons to having access to technology at school. Laptops and desktops are available at the library and on C.O.W.s (computer on wheels) and there is complete access to wireless Internet throughout the building.

According to Principal Paul Mehlhorn the big costs comes from the variable: the laptops. “The cost is great,” said Mr. Mehlhorn, regarding the replacement of and fixing of laptops.

Mr. Mehlhorn also regarded that everything the school does falls back to the “Mission Statement” and Marshwood’s core values. The school decided that the pros outweighed the cons and that laptops, computers, wireless Internet, and the newly added Gmail accounts were beneficial in student learning and, “are helpful tools,” said Mr. Mehlhorn.

A problem with technology usage and demand in school is that not all students have access to technology at home. Some classes are using almost no paper at all and this makes it difficult for students without access to technology at home. The population of students is substantially larger than the number of computers and laptops at Marshwood as well.

With growing technology worldwide, computer use can be a greener, more efficient tool in school, and can also make things harder for some. For school usage the pros seem to outweigh the cons and will keep being pursued by Marshwood High School and schools nationwide.
