College Bound?

By Caleb Jones

Seniors: are you sick of all the paper work that you have to fill out and send to colleges or how applications sit in mail rooms for such a long time? Before Marshwood used Naviance students had to fill out applications and get recommendations on paper. Students also had to complete a resume on paper. Now this college admissions process is available on Naviance.

The guidance department found a website that will take care of the paper problem. Mrs. Lindsay Edson, guidance counselor at Marshwood High School, said “I worked at Salem High School in New Hampshire. I worked there four years ago and they had Naviance.” Mrs. Edson loved the program and when she came to Marshwood she encouraged the guidance department to implement the Naviance program.

“There’s a lot of work in putting it together. We upload all of our students’ information including GPAs, transcripts, SAT scores and more. It’s really individualized to you students,” said Mrs. Edson. Throughout the years at Marshwood the guidance counselors will add more information to Naviance for each student. “Every year Naviance shifts a little bit, so we are constantly updating it with the correct info,” said Mrs. Edson.

There are a lot of things the guidance department can do with Naviance. They decide what the students will have available on their profiles. “We can turn things on and off for you guys... and things like the resume and college applications make it have speed and accuracy for the colleges to receive information. Before, we mailed info. and it just sat in the mail rooms. So, immediately through Naviance, we can upload info. and the colleges will get it right away,” said Mrs. Edson.

The guidance department has also been trying to incorporate other students in the Naviance program rather than just seniors. “We’ve been using it a lot ,and we’ve been sending everything online with no problem. Right now we’re using it for the sophomore career projects and having them do some stuff like the resume and add some colleges. We also plan to go into junior class advisories in January and introduce Naviance, and by the end of the year the freshman class will also be somehow using Naviance,” said Mrs. Edson.

The program is easy to use and gives students everything they need to apply to colleges. “It’s extremely easier to use than filling papers, and I feel like it’s a lot faster to use than on paper because it’s all electronic. It wasn’t too difficult, but there was a lot of stuff to do. If you work around all that, it’s easy,” said senior Ryder Schumacher. If you haven’t checked out Naviance, you’ll be using it before the school year ends. It’s so easy and so quick. Log on and give it a try.
