Marshwood’s anatomy teacher, Mr. Vinny Johnson, ran one of the hardest races, known as an Ironman November 5, 2011 in Panama City, Florida. “To race it was the ultimate challenge” said Mr. Johnson. He really completed the Ironman for self pride and “to overcome doubt.”
According to the Ironman website, on February 18, 1978, John and Judy Collins, triathletes from California, started a Hawaiian Ironman triathlon. Now the world’s triathletes come to compete in this monster challenge. The Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2 mile run. The Ironman is held in dozens of locations from Georgia to Las Vegas. To run the Ironman you have to qualify in one of the twenty eight qualifying races.
To train for this ultimate challenge Mr. Johnson had to work out every day. He swam twenty, biked three hundred, and ran sixty miles a week. This kind of work is for no amateur. Mr. Johnson is aiming to become a licensed professional marathon runner. You have to place in the top three of the amateur competitors to be eligible for a professional license. Overall in the Ironman challenge, Mr. Johnsonh placed thirty fifth but eleventh out of the amateurs. His time was nine hours and twenty seven minutes.
Mr. Johnson enjoys marathons for one reason and that’s to see himself steadily improve. If he continues this hobby he could potentially get paid for doing something he enjoys. Congratulations Mr. Johnson on your triumph over doubt!
