5.9oz or 5lbs: Which Would You Rather Carry?

by Jazzy Ross

E-books are small, electronic libraries which can allow students to read their textbooks as well as books in PDF format without having to carry paper copies around. Books can be read on the Nook, Kindle, iPad, eReader or even on the computer.

Most tablets have a battery life of up to a month, can hold up to 1,200 book,s and fit into a pocket, but the best thing? Its weight is only about 5.9 oz.

When you compare the size of an e-book with the weight and size of a textbook, which can weigh anywhere around 5 lbs, it just seems more logical to invest in electronic books. Especially when most students bring home more than two textbooks a day which gets heavy real quick.

Some might be concerned that the e-books might cause a decrease in library funds and close, but libraries are “forever.” They’re needed to help people find information and they’ve always been able to adapt to new technology.

“Public libraries will not be affected by the advancement of e-books. Libraries are known for adapting to all kinds of new technologies and already offer free e-books on the web,” said Mrs. Cynthia Bufithis, Marshwood High School librarian. “Libraries are also a great gathering place for people of all different back rounds.”

Libraries have adapted by starting an online library which makes books available to citizens for borrow. The website is free and only requires that you have a library card which you can sign up for online.

The biggest problem of bringing e-books into the school would be cost. Marshwood High School has a small technology fund which makes some wonder if purchasing e-books is really worth it. But in the words of Machiavelli, “the ends justify the means.”

If each student at Marshwood, all 700 of them, were to receive eReader the price would be around $99-$150 per student or at least $70,092. That may sound like a lot, but at Marshwood Middle school at least $45,000 must be spent on student laptops alone, not to mention the cost of replacing them.

It would definitely be expensive to purchase digital textbooks. The books would need to be updated and bought in the PDF format. The good thing about having “e-textbooks” would be that students would not lose their books or have reason to bring the wrong book or leave it in their locker.

It would also help to lessen the load that students carry around everyday to school and home. Students wouldn’t need to make as many visits to their lockers or complain about the need for a backpack.

“Information comes in a variety of formats and e-books just provide another venue for finding that information” said Mrs. Bufithis.

E-books are the future of textbooks and allow for easier access to books and reading material. It’s fast and simple, just the way students like their information.
