Get a Helping Hand from a Trained Tutor

By: Caleb Jones and Lance Lord

Do you ever have trouble with writing assignments but aren’t sure who to have help you out? As of January 24, 2012, there’s a new resource at Marshwood that writers will appreciate: a student-staffed writing center. “At the Writing Center any student or adult can go and talk to another writer at any stage of the writing process,” said Ms. Renee Liepold, English teacher and director of the writing center.

A writing center is a place where you can go if you are struggling with any piece of writing.. “ It’s open every period the day: first through seventh period. There will be someone in the writing center; most of the time there are multiple people available,” said Ms. Liepold.

Don’t worry if you’re wondering is these students are qualified to help with your writing. Tutors were recommended by teachers from any discipline. Once they were selected and accepted the invitation, students were trained on an early release day in December. Tutors were taught effective ways of helping students with their writing as well as what’s not appropriate when helping a student writer.

“I presented the idea to the English department and then to the administration,” said Ms. Liepold. Liepold was writing center tutor in college and when she started teaching at Erskine Academy there was already a writing center there. When she started teaching at Erskine, she became the new director.

When Ms. Liepold came to Marshwood she learned there was already a desire to start a center, but there were no means to do so. Ms. Liepold did a lot of planning and organizing and presented the idea to our school. She had a meeting with Mr. Melhorne, the principle at Marshwood High School, and Mr. Rosinski, the English department head. This year, the English department is making the Writing Center a reality.

The Writing Center will open the first day of second semester and will be available all periods of the day. There are twenty five qualified tutors. The more people come and use the Writing Center the better it will do. It can become a permanent resource for students.

Writing Center tutor Emily Peele explained, “for training, we spent the last early release day in the teacher’s room from 7:45 to 2:00 learning the best ways to effectively help people with their writing and what would not be appropriate.” Tutors also had to read packets, participate in group activities and complete a tutoring session. These tutors worked hard for their new titles.

“We hope to help as many people as possible” said Emily Peele, and “tutoring sessions may last [up to] 20 minutes, or a student may need to come back for additional sessions during the following school days.”

Everyone is welcome to check out the Writing Center, starting January 24, 2012, located in the MHS Learning Center. So take advantage of this new resource next time you’re working on an English paper, a history research project, a science lab, or anything else teachers send your way.
