Hawks Hoops Soar

by Caleb Jones

The NBA season began late this year due to the lockout. Many of you have missed basketball for a while, but Marshwood boy’s varsity basketball team is already into their season.

The Marshwood boy’s varsity basketball team is looking good so far. They have already played three scrimmages. Two of those scrimmages ended in victory for the Hawks. These two games were against Dover and Brunswick. The only loss in the preseason for the Hawks was against York. Even though it was a loss the boys played a great game and took it to overtime with York. That’s great considering York made it to the the second round of the playoffs last year.

There is a lot of talent on the boy’s basketball team this year. “Matt Crosby and Jack Verrill both lead scoring and rebounding in the last few years for us, and they’re also the most experienced on our team,” said Mike Zamarchi, head coach of the boys varsity basketball team. “Troy Pappas is playing well this year, and he’s kind of like our sixth man out there. Luke Fernandez is another senior and he’s a great leader and role model for the younger kids,” explained Zamarchi.

Coach Zamarchi also said that Dani Veino, a guard, is fun to watch because he’s always hustling and is one of the team’s strong outside shooters. Other players to watch are: Brady Dodge, who moved here from Noble this year, Brady Innes, Robert Jones, Jack Letellier, Alex McLean, and Reggie Muchmore.

One disadvantage that most Marshwood sports teams have is that the teams they play are from bigger schools or from cities with large populations like Deering, Portland, Scarborough, Bonny Eagle, Cony, and Bangor. This allows for the other teams to have more big and strong players because they have such a larger selection of athletes to choose from. “So we’re going to need to get tougher physically, play defense and rebound, and we should be fine,” said Coach Zamarchi.

“There are a lot of good teams, and a lot of very in the teams in the league. There’s sixteen teams in the league, and we could finish anywhere from eighth to the top. I think we’re in the top of the league, but we’ve got a lot of work to do. I have a good feeling and if we keep playing like we’ve been playing we should be fine,” said Coach Zamarchi.

Six foot three, one hundred eighty five pound Matthew Crosby, a shooting guard for the Hawks, said, “I want to work on getting better ball handling, better defensive skills, and work on my rebounding.”

Zamarchi also said that the team’s goal is to make it to the tournament which is the playoffs. “Once we make the tournament anything can happen,” said Coach Zamarchi. Crosby also said, “I want to make it to the playoffs. Once we’re there, and the way we’re playing, I believe we can get to the state finals.”

The team’s hopes are high and their efforts are great. Help support these boys’ hard work and determination by showing up to the games. They would really appreciate the support.
