In the small town of South Berwick there is a new restaurant. Previously the building was a small gym, and it was renovated into the Isidore Tavern in less than a year. Its location, sitting at the center of town, is a great place for local business.
The Isidore Tavern is located at 18 Portland St in downtown South Berwick. With new rustic life being brought to town, the streets become more full. Plenty of parking spots line downtown South Berwick from Portland St. to Main St. The Isidore Tavern also has parking behind the building. The doors of the restaurant open at 4pm everyday. Monday through Thursday and Sunday they close at 9pm and on the weekend, Friday and Saturday, Isidore is open until 10pm.
The name of the tavern has a unique history to it. The name Isidore means “phantom ghost ship” according to the tavern’s website, where the whole history is explained. The Isidore was headed to New Orleans, and some of the crew members had horrible dreams the night before they left. The next day the remains of the ship washed up on the shores of Ogunquit. The Isidore is said to be seen in foggy, bad weather, with tattered sails and blank stares from the ghost crew members.
Along with the Isidore Taverns history, its style and variety of food creates a unique atmosphere for guests. Isidore has everything from seafood to steak, and even brick oven flatbread pizza. With reasonable prices, guests are able to taste many different styles of food. Appetizers are priced anywhere from $6 to $11 and meals range from $10 to $24. Weekends are a busy time for employees of the tavern thanks to their flat screen TVs at the bar. Sports games are always airing.
"At the Isidore Tavern you feel welcomed" said Marshwood junior, Anna Karosis. "I have eaten there three times and every time the food has been outstanding." Anna's favorite part about her experience at the tavern is the guarantee to get a delicious meal every time. Along with Anna many guests have posted on the tavern's blog of their wonderful experiences and service.
Our experience at the tavern was great. The service was friendly and welcoming, food was very presentable, and the atmosphere was fun but relaxing. The menu had an array of choices and all were reasonably priced. We enjoyed the Sobo Farmstead flat bread pizza. It was nicely placed on the plate and served in a decent amount of time. Although we didn't get dessert there were good choices like cheesecake and ice cream. With music playing in the background and chefs signing to the tunes, the night was enjoyable. We suggest if you have free time on the weekend pop over to the Isidore Tavern and taste the wonderful menu.
