Marshwood hasn’t been known for its strong athletics for roughly twenty years, but it seems that the teams are turning around. With the field hockey team coming off a state title run that just fell short, and all the excitement for the basketball and hockey teams (along with lacrosse and baseball/softball in the spring), the winter and spring seasons should be a turn of events.
Because of the wide success of last year’s athletic seasons, a lot of anticipation is felt by students and our community. Last year, boys soccer, boys basketball, ice hockey, boys and girls lacrosse, and baseball teams all made their way to the playoffs. Making it to the playoffs is a great accomplishment.
Since boys soccer fell short at the quarter finals this year and the field hockey team made it all the way to the state championship game, you can only imagine the anticipation for the winter athletics. One man that believes in the opportunities for success is the school’s Athletic Director, Mr. Rich Buzzell.
Mr. Buzzell believes that success may not be measured in wins and losses, but he does have high expectations when it comes to commitment. “The expectation for this year’s teams are the same as they were last year, and the year before that. We expect all of our kids to give 100% of their time and effort and energy to their teams when they are with them and to always put their team and teammates above their individual needs.”
Off season workouts and commitment are the keys to success, according to Mr. Buzzell. “I would say just don't show up day one and hope things are going to happen. Off season work in the weight room and working on conditioning will only enhance athletic abilities. Always putting the team’s needs in front of your own needs will also have a hand in ensuring success for the greater good.”
One man that knows what Mr. Buzzell is talking about is the co-captain of Marshwood’s boys basketball team, Matt Crosby. The 6’ 3” senior has been playing varsity basketball for four years, and this isn’t because of his great personality. Matt is a great example of what hard work and commitment can do to those who pursue it, He’s leading the Hawks, along with teammate Jack Verrill, with a promising 3-1 record.
Matt said about the Hawks compared to other Class A contenders, “I think that we are one of the stronger programs in the SMAA. As I watch other teams compete I see us as one of the more serious teams, where we don't fool around while we are on the court, or before the games in the locker rooms.” Crosby has noticed the strong commitment of his teammates, and feels that they have “all the right tools to make a deep run in the playoffs.”
