Marshwood Girl’s Varsity Basketball

by Jorden Mitchell

Walking into Marshwood High School’s gym you will see a set of names on the wall. On one side of the board is boy’s varsity and on the other it’s the girl’s varsity. Having your name up on that board means a lot, but what people don’t realize is how hard it is to get your name up there.

The girl’s varsity basketball program has ten returning players this season. The team is made up of six seniors: Ali Bartlett, Aubrey Folger, Nicole Lachance, Jorden Mitchell, Kayla Rackley, and Tatum Schladenhauffen. The juniors are Hannah Ferguson, Jillian Gori, Abby Hyson, and Alli Schoff. Finishing the team is new member, sophomore Johnna Kashmer and freshman, Megan Mclean.

The team’s coach is Mr. Lee Petrie. He is entering his eighth year coaching. In the Portland Press Herald Coach Petrie said “our game plan is push and press,” and that is exactly what this team does.

This Marshwood girl’s team is athletic and likes to run the floor and press all over the place. In the opening season game at Portland, the Hawks pressed from baseline to baseline. The team acts like it has been practicing for months when in fact it has only been three weeks since tryouts. Senior Aubrey Folger said “we’ve been playing together for so long that we just know where people are.”

One of the captains, senior Ali Bartlett, said “our team works hard” and is going to be very good this season. The home games for the month of December and January are:

Friday (12/16) vs.Scarborough,
Tuesday (12/20) vs. McAuley this is a double header with the boys varsity
Friday (12/30) vs. Chevrus.
Friday (1/6) vs. Westbrook
Tuesday( 1/10) vs. Thornton Academy

Come out and support the girl’s varsity!
