Marshwood Student Government Voices Student Concerns: Advocates for Better Food

by Ryder Schumacher

The student government at Marshwood High School is striving toward expanding the food inventory in the cafeteria.

Some of the potential new foods that may introduced are chips and salsa, tacos, burritos, fizz ed soda, and fruit salad. These foods were suggested by students during a poll taken by forty percent of the student body, which was given during advisory by members of student government.

The process of getting new food items into the high school cafeteria relies on how well the food items will sell. “Some of the new foods can be introduced very easily, like a fruit salad. If we present the food administrator with proof that a new product will sell, then he'll most likely place it on the next ordering cycle, meaning it would be introduced on the next food shipment,” said junior student government member Cody Furbish.

Not only does student government aim to bring new foods to the cafeteria, but they also are trying to bring the prices of the salad bar down.

“We are working to bring the price of the salad bar down, but it is complicated” said Furbish, adding “seventy percent of the polled student body said they'd buy from the salad bar if it was cheaper. That is good for our cause.”

Student government has also expressed interest in the school acquiring healthier foods which was reinforced the poll that was taken in select advisories.

“We have some healthy food in the cafeteria, but I think we need much more” stated senior Madison Gilbert. “Right now all the unhealthy foods are cheap and the healthier foods are expensive; it definitely needs to change.”

Student government is confident that new and improved foods will be circulating through the cafeteria by the end of this year, hopefully in time for leaving seniors to have a taste.
