Marshwood’s one act play is approaching during this new year, and as usual, English teacher Mr. Joshua Livingston is leading the fun. The play, written by Gregory Maguire, is called “The Seven Stage a Comeback.”
The story is a takeoff from the fairy tale classic that Disney made famous, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In this rendition, Snow White has left with Prince Charming and the dwarfs are lost without her. “They miss her for different reasons and they want to go see her for different reasons” said Mr. Livingston, “so they set off on this journey not really knowing what they are going to find.”
To audition for the play, students retrieved materials from Mr. Livingston which included monologues from the play. Students performed the monologue in front of the other performers onstage and then performed a scene from the play with other students. “The students are put together on stage to see how they work together and see if they need any direction” said Livingston.
One of the dwarfs will be played by Marshwood senior Lina Tullgreen, who is the singing dwarf. “The play should be interesting and fun with all the fairytale stuff in it,” said Lina Tullgreen. She hasn’t run through the whole script, but from what Mr. Livingston has told her, the play should be a hit.
One act plays differ from full length plays in multiple ways. “A one act play versus a full length play is similar to a short story versus a novel” stated Livingston. “The focus of the play is narrowed as well.”
The author of this one act play is Gregory Maguire. Maguire takes popular childhood stories and transitions them into adult books. He is most famous for taking stories and shifting perspective away from the traditional main character. Maguire wrote the novel, and now Broadway play, Wicked, which retells the story of The Wizard of Oz from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West.
Marshwood’s one act play, “The Seven Stage a Comeback,”will be performed at 7:00 p.m. on Friday March 2nd, and 7:00 p.m. the following Wednesday, March 14th. In addition, Marshwood will be hosting the One Act Play Festival the following weekend where nine other schools will be performing their plays in a competition.
Tickets for the play will be three dollars at the door, and all are invited to witness some one act magic.
