Twelve Goals. Two Games.

by Brandon Lebel

Hockey is a low scoring game right? Tell that to the Marshwood hockey team.

Marshwood has some high expectations for this year’s hockey season after making the playoffs last year. With players returning from last year, including a leading goal scorer, sophomore Peter Lajeunesse, the team’s high expectations are very realistic. In the first two games of the 2011-2012 season Marshwood scored twelve goals, and only gave up four.

The first game of the season was against Gorham. The team started off slow, but in the second period scoring ensued. The final score of the game was 6 - 4, Marshwood. South Portland was their second opponent, and are even bigger than Gorham. It didn’t matter though; once Marshwood scored in the first period they never stopped. Six goals and one hour later, the game was over and Marshwood won, with a shutout from Senior goalie Kyle Hitchens.

The next day Corey Wright said, “we are looking pretty good, and we’re shootin’ for a playoff spot!”

These wins wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the hard work put in by these players. They practice before school even starts! Practice starts at 5:45am and goes until 7:00am at the Dover Ice Arena. Then players head off to school.

Marshwood has to continue to play hard because they have some difficult games ahead. They have to play Thornton, Falmouth, and the infamous Chevrus on senior night. Senior night is the last home game of the regular season where all the seniors start and play their last home game. Marshwood beat Chevrus in the playoffs last year.

Mr. Eric Royal, the team’s head coach, has only ever coached this team, yet he is more than qualified to be coaching. He went to Spaulding and set multiple records. He played at UNH, a Division I school, and after college he went to Europe to play in a semi-pro league.

Marshwood has their work cut out for them this year, but if they continue to play as a team, they have the potential to go all the way.
